Position Overview
A respected Dallas business law firm is seeking an experienced Civil/Commercial Litigation Legal Assistant to support multiple attorneys handling sophisticated disputes involving businesses and executives.
This is a demanding litigation desk requiring substantial commercial litigation experience, independent drafting ability, and hands-on knowledge of Texas state and federal court procedures. The successful candidate must be prepared to contribute with minimal ramp-up time.
Non-Negotiable Qualifications
Applicants must meet all of the following requirements:
- At least five years of litigation legal assistant or paralegal experience
- At least three years of direct commercial or business litigation experience
- Meaningful Texas litigation experience
- Hands-on eFileTexas/TexFile and PACER/CM-ECF filing experience
- Working knowledge of the Texas Rules of Civil Procedure, litigation deadlines, and applicable federal local rules
- Ability to independently draft pleadings, discovery requests and responses, motions, subpoenas, notices, and correspondence
- Experience supporting multiple attorneys and managing competing deadlines
- Advanced Microsoft Word, legal-document formatting, and proofreading skills
- Excellent communication, organization, judgment, and attention to detail
Candidates who do not possess the required commercial litigation, Texas litigation, and state and federal e-filing experience will not be considered.
Qualifying Commercial Litigation Experience May Include:
- Breach of contract and business tort claims
- Commercial fraud and other business disputes
- Trade secret and non-compete matters
- Corporate governance disputes
- Sophisticated construction disputes
- Commercial employment litigation
- Other complex disputes involving businesses or executives
Experience primarily involving personal injury, plaintiff-side mass tort or class-action matters, insurance defense, high-volume worker's compensation, immigration, family law, or criminal defense will not satisfy the commercial litigation requirement. General litigation experience without meaningful commercial litigation exposure will also not qualify.
Key Responsibilities
- Draft, revise, format, proofread, and file pleadings, motions, discovery, subpoenas, briefs, notices, and correspondence
- Coordinate electronic filings in Texas state and federal courts
- Calculate, calendar, and monitor court and procedural deadlines
- Support multiple attorneys and manage competing assignments
- Maintain attorney calendars and coordinate hearings, depositions, mediations, meetings, travel, and court appearances
- Organize case files and assist with discovery and document production
- Prepare tables of contents and tables of authorities
- Prepare deposition, hearing, mediation, appellate, and trial materials
- Assist with trial notebooks, exhibits, witness materials, and courtroom support
- Communicate professionally with clients, opposing counsel, courts, experts, and vendors
- Assist with billing, expense reports, and other administrative responsibilities
- Handle confidential information with professionalism and discretion
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with a commercial litigation boutique, business law firm, or Am Law litigation practice
- Experience supporting multiple commercial litigation attorneys
- Trial-preparation and courtroom-support experience
- Appellate e-filing experience
- Experience preparing tables of contents and tables of authorities
- Proficiency with NetDocuments, Clio, or comparable legal platforms
- Demonstrated employment stability
Schedule and Work Arrangement
Regular attendance at the Uptown Dallas office is required five days per week. Candidates should carefully consider the commute and confirm that they can reliably work the required schedule.
After six months, limited work-from-home flexibility of up to three days per month may be available with attorney approval.
